I don't have to tell you Starbucks is awesome, do I? For most people, there's home, there's work, and then there's Starbucks. Starbucks even has a name for this. They call it the "third place.". For 13 years, I've been lucky enough to have my third-place also be my second-place! For a while I thought it was all three...but it was worth it. I was once a manager, I met my husband there, and he even proposed to me at a Starbucks while I was on my 10 minute break! Then we had a couple of kids and then I stepped down so I could stay home with them. Once my youngest went to preK, I decided I'd go back to work, but only while they were in school. It's been working perfectly for this family for the past 5 years. Honestly, they'll never get rid of me!
That being said...here's my "Ode to Starbucks" lunch. Did you know that if you have a registered Starbucks card that you can earn free drinks OR food?! What a great option! After only twelve swipes of your card, you've earned it. (see my starbucks rewards tips below, after the lunch of course.) I always opt for the food since I get all I can drink for free while I'm working. Today I snagged a free reward egg salad sandwich. They're so good! I split it between the two girls lunches, added some apples, and grapes with cheese stuck on a fabulous Starbucks splash stick. Thanks to www.momables.com for the idea! Who says those have to be for drinks only? They're free and better yet, they're dishwasher safe. I wish more people would reuse them...and the cup sleeves for that matter.
Now for top secret rewards info:
-First, go to mystarbucksrewards.com and get that card registered. Do it by 3/14/13 and they'll give you $5 with your $5 reload. That offer is only for new accounts.
-download the Starbucks app on your smart phone if you'd like...it's so much easier to keep track of your balance and rewards there. They'll also message you free music downloads. Sweet!
-Here's the secret info...probably not too secret, but not clearly stated: every time you make a purchase, you'll earn a "star." BUT: if your card balance does not cover your whole purchase...you won't get one. So make sure that you've got enough money on that thing! We can reload it simply right at the register with a card or even with your phone app. (Another tip: if you don't want to sign for that credit card purchase...reload for $24.99 or less! Most people do $20)
-If you're buying more than one thing: make us baristas ring it separately. Even if you get a snarky face...who cares? It's free stuff, yo! Honestly, it's not difficult for us, just let us know right off the bat so we can do it. Otherwise, we have to void off items we've already rung in...and they keep track of our line voids. So speak up! Say, "I'd like you to ring these separately, please." Then rattle off your individual orders. Tons of people do it. Be aware of the line, though. If it is long, and you're holding it up with more than one individual order, people will get annoyed and so will your baristas. Don't be afraid of your barista...she's seen it all!
-Start earning your rewards. 12 transactions equals a free drink or something from the pastry case. Free drinks are any size, anything added in...have fun with it. Want any good recommendations? Ask me in the comments below! You can't get bottled drinks as your reward. The food is limited to fresh pastries, sandwiches, bistro boxes, oatmeal and yogurts. You can't get prepackaged cookies, mints, candy or nuts.
-If someone gives you a new Starbucks card: have us transfer that balance onto your registered card. You don't need a ton of registered cards. Just one. We cannot reload cards for less than $5, so make sure you transfer the new card over before using it.
Any questions about it? Ask me! Want me to tell you how to order? Comment below. Anything goes. Thanks for supporting my 401k!
The SB app can be reloaded with a Paypal account :)
ReplyDeleteI had no idea! Thanks Myra!
DeleteGreat post! Starbucks is definitely a regular stop for me. I love that they are able to be flexible with your schedule, and our local baristas are all amazing. I never see openings listed, but keep thinking about applying. I have to work around my hubby's schedule, and it would be great to find something that could do that. Hey, and free coffee ain't so bad, either!
ReplyDeleteDon't wait for a listing!! Go online to Starbucks.com/careers and send in your application...it's easy and you can send it to 5 stores nearby. I can't guarantee that they could all be as flexible with the schedule as I have been lucky to find, but then again, I've been working ere since 1997. If you're clear about when you can work, especially evenings and weekends and early mornings, I'm sure you'll find someone who needs to fill that slot! Good luck!
DeleteCan you help find a list of which coffee's are luten free? I know the skinny ones are not. Not sure about new flavors.
ReplyDeleteGluten free sorry typo
DeleteMonica...the GF stuff is tricky. I asked one of my GF friends and she said that each region has different ingredients in syrups, especially white mocha and seasonal drinks. Frappuccino beverages are not. And if you're very sensitive, many of the things we use to make the drinks are cross contaminated when we rinse and blend and stir, etc. best way to find out is to ask your barista to see the bottles of syrup and check the ingredients for yourself. And if cross contamination is a real issue for you, you may need to ask them to sanitize the pitcher and spoon before using...But then it's stuck on a steam wand that's not possible to sanitize while the store is open. Starbucks doesn't list the ingredients online simply bc they tend to change. Good luck!
Deleteugh. White choc is my favorite but I usually stick with vanilla lattee or brew of the day with a shot of vanilla. My favorite barista (Target's starbucks) puts a pitcher of hot water on the steamer to clean it. They are really careful never had a problem there. The one in Barnes and Noble I avoid. The one in the mall is pretty good about sanitizing if they aren't busy. Saw on in Buford, that had a dedicated GF area. yay
DeleteJust got some SB this morning and kept both drink sticks for our bentos as well. Hehe
ReplyDeleteThe hubbs is the master of "I have 3 separate orders" for the stars on the card. I have a really hard time remembering to do this. I'm just so used to the barista at the local hit-and-run coffee place punching my card for each coffee that I get, not just for the one transaction.
ReplyDeleteMy God, I love Starbucks. Literally, I am there every single day during the week on my lunch break. They know me by name and always have my drink waiting for me. I always order a Venti Iced 5 shot Peppermind White Mocha. Mmmmmmmmmm... <3 I also like the Java Chip Frapp. I like just about anything. They have a new Hazelnut Macchiato and I wanna try it seeing as how I'm a huge Nutella fan, but I'm scared it won't taste anything like Nutella and I'll hate it lol.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions for yummy drinks?
While the hazelnut macchiato is good, it tastes nothing like Nutella since it has no chocolate I'd recommend a mocha with toffeenut or hazelnut. Either one is great and Nutella-ish. Or even a java chip with hazelnut...that would be good!
DeleteYou where once a manager so you should know that ringing items separately brings your average ticket number down. It slows the line when someone wants five or so items ring in separately. There are rules and teaching people how to break them or go around them is sad. Have more pride in being a partner and don't insult other partners by making your own rules. That's why society its the way it is. We all make our own rules to benefit ourselfs.
ReplyDeleteOuch. Questioning my pride in being a partner? Shame on you. Yes. I was a manager once. But that was ten years ago, and quite honestly, I forgot about the average ticket. As far as making my own rules? No, I didn't do that. If there were rules about ringing separately, I think Starbucks would have addressed that already. I wasn't teaching people how to break rules...just how to get the most out of their Starbucks cards. I'm disappointed that you'd be so judgemental towards me on this one. Don't blame me for society...and please don't suggest that I'd ever insult partners. You'll also notice that I mentioned to be aware of the line. Thanks for your comment, though.
DeleteThanks for the info
