feeling a little short

Short on time...so LOOK! LUNCH!

Romaine lettuce salad with snow peas and Colby-Jack cheese, egg, strawberries and croutons, an apple and homemade ranch dressing in the mini dipper. I buy the cheese by the block and slice it using the side of my big cheese grater. It saves a bit of money in the long run.

Cherries, Colby-Jack cheese, water crackers and tomato soup in the thermos. We love when cherries are in season...and cheap!

feeling a little geeky

so I guest posted over at What's in Our Lunch Bags? It's one of my favorite lunches so far, and she's got one of my favorite blogs! Oh her talent astounds me. What this woman can do with a slice of cheese and a food pen is amazing.

Thanks, again, K, for letting me hijack your blog for a minute...

feeling a little experimental

I decided to experiment cutting the carrots differently.  Sometimes a little switch in shape and thickness can help my semi picky eater try something again.  Our PlanetBox Shuttle is the perfect size for this lunch. Using the Lunch Punch puzzle shaped cutter, I swapped around a whole wheat and white bread turkey sandwich to make it appealing. In the dip cup there's homemade ranch dressing.

For the mini woman, in seventh grade, I stacked up a turkey and butter lettuce sandwich, pita chips, carrots and snap peas with a side of Sabra Classic Hummus.  It's all packed tightly in a Lunchbots Duo container. The Lunchbots box always seems to hold more than I expect.

feeling a little wiped out

Day one of the 2013-14 school year is under our belt.  Having been up a couple of hours earlier than we have been, we are all wiped out!

If your kids started today, I hope it was as good as ours.

For lunch on day two I made them each some leftover chicken noodle soup in the mustachioed thermos food jars, blueberries, carrots and ranch and a turkey, cheese and lettuce wrap.

feeling like a half break

Ever feel like taking a half break? Then this is the lunch for you. I got a partner (employee) sample from work today to try out the new sandwiches at Starbucks...so I took my sample and forwarded it on to my kids via this lunch. The new ham and New York cheddar sammy will surely be scarfed down by my two kids. Who will then be required to tell me just how good it was. Hey, momma needs a break. I call it a half break since i actually had to put the rest of the lunch together. And they each got half a sandwich.

For those of you who aren't lucky enough to work at Starbucks...those rewards from your Starbucks card are good for food too! Check out my post on how to use your card to the fullest HERE

Don't have a Starbucks card yet? Where have you been?! Get one NOW!  Use my link so I can make three cents HERE. And support my 401K!

They've got a half of said sandwich with blanched carrots, potato straws and a fortune cookie. We are trying out the blanched carrots to see if they get eaten. Lately, uncooked carrots have been passed on to friends. Cross your fingers!

How cute is the marketing crew at Starbucks? Why, yes, I will unwrap and unwind. Thank you.

feeling a little smart

Hopefully these lunches count as "smart food" so the girls will do great on their CRCT state tests. It makes for a long week for the kids, but it's got to be done.

They each have spaghetti in their mustache thermos containers. Egg, sunflower seeds, peanuts and a blueberry muffin in the red bento box from AllThingsforSale. The Lunchbots duo box has an egg, muffin, grapes, trail mix and a granola bar. They each will get an apple, too, but I've got to run out to the grocery store to get them.

feeling a little steamy

Spring break is over. We had such a great week. Back to the grind. The girls have the dreaded CRCT state testing this week, and healthy lunches are a definite must...their brains need it! Testing starts Wednesday. Wish em luck!

I got an electric steamer this week...I suck at steaming vegetables and this thing is awesome! You can even make the boiled eggs in it. I love that I can just set the timer and walk away. The eggs took about 15 minutes to cook and the broccoli was only 6 minutes (they like it crunchy). I also made frozen fish filets and squash in it the other day. Delicious. I've got a feeling that this week will be a steamy week here in the lunchysphere.

Today's lunches are like little taster boxes. Monbento sent me a new bento box to try out and my sixth grader was very eager to use it. So far it's a great box. I will be writing a review on it soon once it's been to and from school and dishwasher a few more times.

They've each got an egg, broccoli with homemade ranch dippers, kiwi, mandarin oranges, a cheese stick and a Chobani Champions yogurt tube. Since the wild child doesn't care for broccoli much, I added some tomatoes to her lunch just in case she gives her broccoli to her friend.

feeling like spring break

I know...spring break is almost over. I haven't made lunches in a week, so I felt like making a fun one today. (Honestly, I'm avoiding laundry again...) We went to visit my mother in Destin, Florida. It's beautiful down there. She spoiled us rotten, we sat on the beach, went shopping and had a great girls vacation. Poor husband had to work...

The people on the beach rallied together to make that giant sea turtle sand sculpture. It was amazing! My girls helped out, too. At one point there were about 20 people all working together. Rather cool.

Today's lunch is a panda rice ball with nori accents (made with our AllThingsforSale panda mold), sliced cheese sticks, fruit leather (organic from Target) cut into letters and trail mix all served in a Lunchbots Duo. Love our Lunchbots!

feeling a little froggy

My adventures in bentoland continue...I got a huge box of supplies from AllThingsforSale this week and I am all too thrilled to exploit them!

With this lunch, I used the ever adorable and versatile CuteZCute cutter. I can't stop humming Kermit the Frog's "Rainbow Connection" right now. This cutter is beyond easy to use...the girls whipped it out and did a bunch of faces themselves.

A froggy faced peanut butter tortilla with candy eyes, raisins (flies for the frogs, of course), a frog Easter egg filled with cheddar bunnies, and applesauce all packed in our Lunchbots Duo container.

feeling like I love Starbucks

I don't have to tell you Starbucks is awesome, do I? For most people, there's home, there's work, and then there's Starbucks. Starbucks even has a name for this. They call it the "third place.". For 13 years, I've been lucky enough to have my third-place also be my second-place! For a while I thought it was all three...but it was worth it. I was once a manager, I met my husband there, and he even proposed to me at a Starbucks while I was on my 10 minute break! Then we had a couple of kids and then I stepped down so I could stay home with them. Once my youngest went to preK, I decided I'd go back to work, but only while they were in school. It's been working perfectly for this family for the past 5 years. Honestly, they'll never get rid of me!

That being said...here's my "Ode to Starbucks" lunch. Did you know that if you have a registered Starbucks card that you can earn free drinks OR food?! What a great option! After only twelve swipes of your card, you've earned it. (see my starbucks rewards tips below, after the lunch of course.) I always opt for the food since I get all I can drink for free while I'm working. Today I snagged a free reward egg salad sandwich. They're so good! I split it between the two girls lunches, added some apples, and grapes with cheese stuck on a fabulous Starbucks splash stick. Thanks to www.momables.com for the idea! Who says those have to be for drinks only? They're free and better yet, they're dishwasher safe. I wish more people would reuse them...and the cup sleeves for that matter.

Now for top secret rewards info:

-First, go to mystarbucksrewards.com and get that card registered. Do it by 3/14/13 and they'll give you $5 with your $5 reload. That offer is only for new accounts.

-download the Starbucks app on your smart phone if you'd like...it's so much easier to keep track of your balance and rewards there. They'll also message you free music downloads. Sweet!

-Here's the secret info...probably not too secret, but not clearly stated: every time you make a purchase, you'll earn a "star." BUT: if your card balance does not cover your whole purchase...you won't get one. So make sure that you've got enough money on that thing! We can reload it simply right at the register with a card or even with your phone app. (Another tip: if you don't want to sign for that credit card purchase...reload for $24.99 or less! Most people do $20)

-If you're buying more than one thing: make us baristas ring it separately. Even if you get a snarky face...who cares? It's free stuff, yo! Honestly, it's not difficult for us, just let us know right off the bat so we can do it. Otherwise, we have to void off items we've already rung in...and they keep track of our line voids. So speak up! Say, "I'd like you to ring these separately, please." Then rattle off your individual orders. Tons of people do it. Be aware of the line, though.  If it is long, and you're holding it up with more than one individual order, people will get annoyed and so will your baristas.  Don't be afraid of your barista...she's seen it all!

-Start earning your rewards. 12 transactions equals a free drink or something from the pastry case. Free drinks are any size, anything added in...have fun with it. Want any good recommendations? Ask me in the comments below! You can't get bottled drinks as your reward. The food is limited to fresh pastries, sandwiches, bistro boxes, oatmeal and yogurts. You can't get prepackaged cookies, mints, candy or nuts.

-If someone gives you a new Starbucks card: have us transfer that balance onto your registered card. You don't need a ton of registered cards. Just one. We cannot reload cards for less than $5, so make sure you transfer the new card over before using it.

Any questions about it? Ask me! Want me to tell you how to order? Comment below. Anything goes. Thanks for supporting my 401k!

feeling a little photogenic

I accidentally bought a portable light box the other day. How do you accidentally buy something? Well, you shop for it on your Amazon app on your phone and then hit the button to buy thinking that you can't actually make a purchase through the app. Well...you can buy things through the app and I did...and I was glad that I did, even if I didn't mean to. Explaining that to the man wasn't so pretty. Good thing it was only $40.

I don't have a fancy camera. All I use to take my pictures is my iPhone. So every picture you see on this blog is honestly, just from an iPhone 4. I'm trying hard to take great pictures, and with the light box, I feel like that may be closer to being true. Be honest...what do you think?

I got the Laurel Hill peace sign pretzels at Whole Foods. They're a big hit around here. The baby corn? Not so much. It was worth a try.

The Lunchbots are a little on the small side for my growing 10 and 11 year old daughters, so they'll be getting a thermos of leftover noodle soup that we made over the weekend.

See the difference? I'm liking the light box a lot.

feeling a little hearty

we had a gorgeous weekend here in Atlanta and the grocery store is beginning to boast tons of produce. I couldn't avoid buying three crates of strawberries for $5 so this week is sure to feature the little beasts more than once...

here's yet another lunch in our lunchbots trio. I seriously love these boxes. and, as I'm always living on the edge, against their recommendations, I wash the lids in the dishwasher and they're fine. they're a little small for a whole lunch, so when I use them, I usually pack a thermos of soup on the side.

today, we've got strawberries easily cut like hearts, blueberries, a turkey and cheese cubed sandwich made with our Funbites Cube-It cutter, oyster crackers for the soup and some yogurt covered pretzels.

feeling a little lunchbot love

I've waited for a long time to actually order a set of Lunchbots lunch boxes. I've looked at them every single time we go to Whole Foods. I've oogled them on other people's blogs. I've stared at them on Amazon. Then the other night I was once again looking them over and I added them to my cart. I went to the checkout and Amazon notified me that I had some rewards points from my credit card...well, that changes everything, doesn't it?

So, a lunchbots duo and trio set were ordered and I've since made a few lunches in them. I've got to say, aside from having to hands wash the lids, I'm rather happy with the product. They are easy to clean, they look great and make it simple to make some healthy and adorable lunches. What is it about those little compartments that begs me to be creative? What psychological trigger is being pulled?
